What are some real world scenarios where you would need to use a compound microscope?
We used to use the compound microscope quite a lot in the medical technology labs, performing blood cell counts, urine bacterial counts, etc. Most of these processes have been automated at this point (coulter counter, etc.). The areas where the microscope is still used are (1) Identification of parasite larvae or eggs in fecal samples, and (2) Pathologic examination of tissues from biopsy or autopsy. I'm sure there are other uses that I cannot recall off the top of my head, but I would say that the microscope is still a very useful tool in medicine and veterinary science, and serves as a useful tool in the instruction of MD candidates in the structure and function and anatomy of various tissues.
